Community (Advanced) Starter Kit 2.0 (AKA CASK) enables an individual or an ISP to quickly create a community Web site such as a user group site, a developer resource site, or a news site. It has seven standard content modules: Articles, Links, Downloads, Photo Gallery, Events and Books. In addition it supports multiple community configurations, quotas, newsletters, voting polls, RSS news feeds and XML web services.

The Community Starter Kit 2.0 is an updated version of the Microsoft Community Starter Kit (CSK) 1.1 that includes new functionality, ASP.NET 2.0 security and bug fixes contributed by the CSK developer community. CASK utilizes the CSK 1.1 data tables, stored procedures and functions with minimal modification to support a clean upgrade path from CSK 1.1 to CASK. Although dubbed a starter kit this application utilizes advanced features of ASP.NET

Hi jpopesku,

Sure enough they aren't there... For now can you please download the 40855 build and go to the CASKDotNet\Communities...\..\.. folder to get them? We (ISO 15926 team) release on Friday and we're all in crunch mode and we have our son (Senior) graduating this week so things are crazy..... I'll get to it early next week and clean up the source to ensure it is complete.

Appreciate your patience and I'll help you through any issues encountered so we can get you up and running as soon as possible!

Hello again!

When I had initially run the setup.exe or WebsiteInstall.msi, I get:

"The installer was interrupted before CASK could be installed. You need to restart the installer to try again."

When I restart the installer and get the same message.

So I decided to try things "on my own" and downloaded the source code. Everything loads properly in VS2008 SP1, and I can get the Admin pages. However, after setting up "localhost", for example, I try to go back to my site and get

Could not failover to /Website/communities/common/themes/default/skins/contentskins/parentsection_parentsection.ascx

Sure enough, when I look in the /common/themes/default/skins folder, the ContentSkins and ControlSkins subfolders are not there. :(

Any suggestions?

Try turning off the UAC (steps follow)

Start ->Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Uncheck Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer and click OK at last.

Restart the computer.

Let me know if you still have problems - I'm on Windows 7 now but was on Vista since it was in Beta so I'm confident it will run/install under vista. Not sure if I was still doing development on CASK when SP1 came out... I suspect when you turn off the UAC you'll be fine.

2009.01.07 We will be using the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) to handle modules - this is a work in progress making the following information now obsolete.

The goal with the new IModule interface is to permit developers to easily add modules to the CASK without having to understand the complex infrastructure. While it is very powerful and extensible, to those that can grasp all of its concepts, it has a relatively long ramp-up time to be able to code against it.

The following data structure (left window) is the extent of the coding developers will have to do in preparation to access their module tables. The IModule interface will utilize this structure during Module setup to create the database table for the developer. I should note that the code was dynamically generated for me and I copy/pasted the applicable snippets from the output window (right window)

The debug output in the top right window was generated with the following 4 lines of executable code in the two methods that follow:

Using the same SQL code (three lines in DataTest below) I was able to point the OnExecuteReader event to the DataTestHandler method to populate a List<NamePageStruc> object. The same code in DataTestHandler could be used on any table structure that is derived from DataBase and has the proper field initialization as shown in the top image (left window).

As I build the new framework for SDMS I will be meeting requirements for the next CASK release (kill two birds with one stone); please bear with me...
